Aspen Backcountry Heavy Half Marathon
The Aspen Backcountry Heavy Half Marathon runs roughly 14.8 miles through the high-altitude trails surrounding Aspen, Colorado in early August. Starting at 7,900 feet and climbing to over 10,100 feet, this race packs 3,169 feet of elevation gain into terrain that's almost entirely dirt trail. The course moves through diverse mountain terrain with views of the Elk Mountains and periodic glimpses of Aspen below. Expect challenging climbs and technical descents as the route navigates between forest sections and more exposed alpine terrain. This is a limited support race with only five aid stations spread across the distance, including one early stop at Henry Stein Park that offers just water, electrolyte drink, and fruit. The altitude and sustained climbing make pacing crucial, especially given the 8-hour cutoff. Runners comfortable with high-altitude efforts and sustained climbing will find their rhythm here, while those new to mountain running or altitude might find the combination challenging. The August timing means variable mountain weather is possible, and the remote sections require self-sufficiency between aid stations.
