Course Overview
The Sourdough Snowshoe Race 30K covers 18.6 miles through Colorado's snow-covered terrain near Nederland, with mandatory snowshoes regardless of conditions. Starting from the South Sourdough Trailhead, the course follows the Sourdough Trail north to Brainard Lake Road, then continues on a loop before returning the same way for a total climbing effort at around 8,400 feet elevation. Expect a mix of forested trail and more open terrain as you move through the route, with the turnaround aid station at Brainard Lake Road providing hot Sport Tea and basic fuel before the return journey. January conditions mean cold temperatures and variable snow depth, so the snowshoe requirement keeps things consistent but adds significant effort to your normal pace. The 11:30 AM cutoff at the halfway point keeps things moving, though racers can drop to the 18K distance if needed. This works well for runners comfortable with winter mountain conditions and the particular grind that snowshoeing brings to familiar trail distances. If you're new to snowshoe racing or prefer more predictable footing, the required gear and mountain winter weather might feel like more challenge than you're after.
