Silverton Alpine 50K
The Silverton Alpine 50K follows historic jeep roads through Colorado's San Juan Mountains, starting and finishing in Silverton at 9,318 feet. This loop course climbs to California Pass at 12,930 feet—the highest point—with 4,569 feet of total elevation gain spread across roughly 31 miles. The route passes through ghost mining towns like Howardsville, Eureka, Animas Forks, and Gladstone, connected by wide jeep roads that see recreational vehicle traffic during summer. Much of the course sits above treeline with limited natural shade, and the high altitude means weather can shift quickly from sun to storms. Runners should expect dusty conditions when OHVs are present and plan for potential afternoon thunderstorms typical of Colorado's high country. This race suits runners comfortable with sustained climbing at altitude and long stretches of exposure. The jeep road surface is runnable but relentless, and the 11-hour cutoff with intermediate time limits at California Pass (2:30 PM) and Gladstone (4:00 PM) requires steady forward progress. Runners who thrive on grinding climbs in remote mountain terrain—and don't mind sharing the trail with occasional vehicle traffic—will find this course rewarding.
