Course Overview
The Continental Divide Trail Run 16-miler takes runners high into the Colorado Rockies above Steamboat Springs in late August. This point-to-point course climbs to over 10,350 feet, moving through alpine terrain with significant elevation gain and the thin air that comes with high-altitude racing. The route follows mountain trails with limited vehicle access—crew support is only available at Rainbow Saddle, reachable by foot, bike, or gondola. Runners pass through Rainbow Saddle twice during the course, suggesting a loop or out-and-back section, before finishing back in town. The terrain shifts from lower-elevation forest into exposed alpine zones near Mt. Werner Summit, where weather can change quickly and shade becomes scarce.
