Grand Mesa Ultras 55K
The Grand Mesa 55K covers roughly 34 miles across Colorado's largest flattop mountain, typically held in late July when wildflowers peak and afternoon thunderstorms are common. This high-altitude course runs between 9,000 and 11,000 feet, following a loop format with six aid stations including multiple visits to Mesa Top, suggesting runners circle back through central staging areas. The route travels across the mesa's distinctive terrain, moving between dense aspen and spruce forests, open meadows dotted with alpine lakes, and exposed ridgeline sections along the famous Crag Crest trail. Much of the course stays relatively high, offering expansive views across western Colorado's canyon country, though afternoon weather can roll in quickly at this elevation. The 11.5-hour cutoff reflects both the technical terrain and altitude demands. Runners comfortable with sustained high-altitude effort and variable mountain weather will appreciate this course. The combination of technical trail sections, altitude, and Colorado's unpredictable summer storms makes this better suited for experienced trail runners than those new to mountain ultras.
