Box Canyon 10 Mile
The Box Canyon 10 Mile in Telluride takes runners on a high-altitude loop that climbs from town through Bear Creek Canyon to the top of the ski resort. Starting at 8,750 feet, the route gains roughly 3,500 feet as it ascends technical singletrack to treeline and beyond, finishing with a descent back through the ski area to the gondola plaza. Most of the climbing happens in the first half as you work up Bear Creek Canyon, transitioning from forested terrain to open alpine country with expansive views into the San Juan Mountains. The single aid station sits at Gold Hill around mile 5.6, positioned after the major ascent. From there, the course follows a mix of doubletrack and singletrack down through the ski resort, offering some recovery time before the final push into town. This race suits experienced mountain runners comfortable with technical terrain and significant altitude. The combination of elevation, steepness, and alpine exposure makes it challenging for anyone new to high-country running. Runners who thrive on sustained climbing and don't mind the thin air at altitude will find this course rewarding, while those seeking a gentler introduction to mountain racing should look elsewhere.
