The Box Canyon 30K takes runners on a challenging 19-mile loop through Telluride's high alpine terrain in late July. Starting from the gondola plaza at 8,750 feet, the course climbs roughly 5,800 feet to a high point of 13,000 feet at Wasatch Junction, combining double track, fire roads, and technical singletrack throughout. The route heads east toward Bridal Veil Falls, passing the historic Smuggler-Union Hydroelectric Plant before climbing into upper Bridal Veil Basin's alpine meadows. From the course's highest point overlooking Upper Bear Creek, runners descend through varied terrain to the Wasatch Connector trail for a final climb to the top of Telluride Ski Resort, then finish with a descent back into town. Three aid stations provide standard trail food, hot options, and hydration support, with the longest stretch—nearly 10 miles—coming between the second aid station and the finish. This race suits experienced mountain runners comfortable with technical terrain and sustained climbing at altitude. The combination of elevation, exposure, and varied surface conditions makes it challenging for beginners, while the high alpine setting and significant vertical gain will appeal to runners seeking a demanding mountain experience in Colorado's San Juan range.
