Barr Lake 50K
The Barr Lake 50K takes place in June at Barr Lake State Park near Brighton, Colorado, featuring three loops of roughly 10.5 miles each around the scenic lake. With less than 500 feet of total elevation gain across the entire distance, this is about as flat as trail running gets — the course runs entirely on dirt paths with minimal climbing and no major hill segments to speak of. Runners circle the lake with continuous water views and backdrop views of Colorado's Front Range mountains. The route stays close to the shoreline for most of the distance, passing through the same aid stations (Lark's Lounge and O'Brian's Oasis) multiple times as you complete each loop. June temperatures can climb steadily through the morning, and with limited tree cover around much of the lake, heat management becomes increasingly important as the day progresses. This race suits runners looking for a fast course and potential PR opportunity, or those wanting to tackle their first 50K without significant elevation challenges. The repetitive loop format means you'll know exactly what's coming, which some find mentally easier while others might find monotonous. If you prefer varied terrain or substantial climbing, this probably isn't your race.
