Royal Gorge Groove 50K
The Royal Gorge Groove 50K takes runners on a 31-mile journey through Colorado's high country above the Arkansas River, starting and finishing at Royal Gorge Ranch near CaƱon City in late April. The course features ~3,500 feet of climbing with a high point around 7,100 feet, following what appears to be an out-and-back format that brings runners back through the start/finish area midway through. Expect cool conditions at elevation, with the possibility of snow even in spring ā welcome to Colorado mountain running. The route travels along canyon rim trails offering views into the Royal Gorge, 900 feet above the river below. Much of the course appears to follow established trails and forest roads, with aid stations spaced every 3-7 miles and water drops at the more remote Dream Weaver locations. The 11-hour cutoff provides reasonable time for the distance and terrain. This race suits runners comfortable with moderate mountain terrain and variable spring weather conditions. Those who enjoy rim running and don't mind potentially chilly temperatures will feel at home here. Runners expecting technical single track or extreme elevation gain might find this more mellow than anticipated, while those new to altitude should plan accordingly for the 6,000+ foot starting elevation.
