Samson's Revenge 27K
Samson's Revenge 27k is a 16.8-mile trail race held in May at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado. The course combines one longer loop with two shorter loops, accumulating 3,000 feet of climbing across fast single track with what organizers call a "big King of the Mountain challenge" worked into the middle sections. The route runs through the historic grounds where Samson, a famous elk, once roamed before being illegally poached in 1995. Runners can expect mostly single track terrain with one aid station positioned at Bible Point—described as a party atmosphere—plus support at the start/finish area. The loop format means you'll get familiar with the course as you progress, which can be both a mental advantage and challenge depending on how the day unfolds. This race suits runners comfortable with moderate climbing spread across multiple loops and those who don't mind seeing the same terrain more than once. The 9-hour cutoff provides reasonable time for the distance and elevation, making it accessible to runners looking to step up from shorter trail races. Those who prefer point-to-point courses or dislike repetitive loops might find the format less appealing.
