Samson's Revenge 55K
The Samson's Revenge 55K takes place in late May at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, combining fast single track with a substantial climbing challenge. The course follows a loop format — one initial loop plus five additional loops — with 6,000 feet of total elevation gain spread across 34 miles. Expect mostly runnable single track punctuated by what organizers call a "King of the Mountain challenge" that likely accounts for much of the climbing. The route stays within the YMCA grounds where elk still roam, moving through terrain that ranges from smooth trail to the more demanding sections around Bible Point, where an aid station marks the high point. At this altitude and latitude, late May typically means variable mountain weather — plan for anything from cool morning starts to warm afternoon temperatures, with the usual possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. This race suits runners comfortable with repetitive loop formats and sustained climbing spread across a long day. The 9-hour cutoff is generous for most trail runners, but the elevation gain and potentially technical sections around the "revenge" climbs will demand respect. If you prefer point-to-point courses or get bored easily on loops, this might not be your ideal fit.
